The fourth generation reels commonly called "white hand lettered" reels were
manufactured between 1943 and 1946. They are called "hand lettered" because
they retained the same printing style on the face of the reel as the gold,
blue-ring and buff reels. Some of the
earliest white reels actually were light grey or off-white in color and some
had specks of color in them. The pure white reels are most commonly found
ones.
During this time,
Sawyer's made more changes to the face design than in the past resulting in
several different styles. Generally, the different face design was limited
to a specific reel number and thus the same reel number isn't found with
different face designs, but not always. Roger Nazeley first researched and indexed the various reel face styles
in his out of print book.
New mounting machines were brought into service
at this time which required two V-shaped alignment notches at the reel's
edge. (Earlier gold foil, blue ring, and buff reels were mounted on machines
requiring only one notch). Most white hand-lettered reels were manufactured
with two notches, though some of the earliest were mounted on older machines
using only a single notch.
Many new titles were added
during the "white hand lettered" era. And as earlier as well as subsequent
reels, the "white hand lettered" reels were made with Kodachrome images which today still retain their original color.
